OCTOBER SURF HARVEST 2009

PHOTOS BY BEAH KAY AND TIM WESTMORE FROM Argentum Imago

The waves havent  been the biggest or cleanest for a normal October, but winter has been giving us a few hints of brilliance here and there. Its been a little bumpy lately, but the winter juice is there.

Here I get a little tube vision, which is normally a staple of wintertime surfing. The Fall barrel-harvest begins.

spit out of a lil shack.

Every once in a while it would have some size to it.

The waves lately have been more fun than big,

Tim from Argentum Imago has been taking a crack at surf photography, and the results are in. Great job Tim!

Junky October surf conditions for the most part, but still really fun nonetheless.

Fitting a high-speed turn into a tight arch up in the lip can make a great surfing photo.

The Early Fall windswells have left it a little choppy and unruly, but with the sun shining its still alot of fun out there.

Here is a photo from the summer... hopefully we will start to get some winter conditions.

High-speed snap transition. Great camera and photography Tim.

Going hard.

Before you write me off, I did make this snap. lol

Here I go for a BMX move called the "can-can".

Its important to get your feet off the board early so you have enough time to tuck them back under you and onto your board.

Here im jus basically getting crazy.... this is the highlight of a surfing version of a "can-can". Juss by this frame alone you would probably never think Im going to try and land this.

After you reach the apex of the move, you throw the board back under your feet and try to stick it.

Here is the landing...  a little out of focus but I stuck it under my feet and landed on the back of the lip. But...did I make it? Not exactly according to myself and most surfing critics... out the back doesnt count. Check back next week...haha

Looking more like spring roll than fall time.

No matter what level of surfing your at, I think progression is the key. You have to get better and progress, or surfing gets frustrating. The more you surf the better you will get. The best thing about surfing is theres no limits... theres no way talent can ever exceed the imagination.

I have been trying to get sum game with kickflips... the closest Ive gotten is almost landing one in the flats. I got my front foot back on my board, but my back foot slipped off the tail. My knee scraped down the middle of my swallow-tail and I was out of the water for a week. Its one of the most dangerous surfing tricks, and I dont think anyone has stuck one above the lip yet.

FALL SUNSET ON THE BEACH

The sunset out front.

Stalking the shallows in seardch of a minnow.

Evening bustle for a tasty biavalve.

Birds of a feather.

2009 VOLCOM PRO-AM AT STEAMER LANE

photos by WK

The Northern California Volcom Pro-Am took place at Steamer Lane on October 24th, 2009. The waves were reallty small and barely breaking. A few top competitors on the WQS tour were in town for the 2009 Oneill Coldwater Classic which starts this week. Some of them signed up for the Volcom event, and competed in the small conditions. I lost out early, but I felt better after witnessing top pros leaving the water with no score, finishing worse than me as the waves were flat for large parts of the competition.

One of the cool things about the Volcom Pro-Am is that it enables the kids to watch talented pros compete in the same event. With events like this there is an obvious leaning curve for the local kids. Another great thing about the Volcom events is that they are free.

Luckily for George Bush he doesnt surf, because someone could easily chuck a shoe at him at Steamer Lane.

Here local town hero Josh Mulcoy lays into a nice turn on home turf. This wave sent him to the next round.

Someone busting one for the score, the judges and the crowd.

The Volcom Bible states that one thou shalt not run over thy fellow kook in a heat.

Local legend surfer Marcel Soros snaps one all the way to the inside wall.
